ASN: Additional Support Needs
At Under the Trees, we strive to make all our sessions as inclusive as possible. Our
ASN sessions are structured to be accessible and inclusive for young people with
additional support needs, who prefer smaller numbers and a quieter area. We
understand that each young person is not defined by their diagnosis, which is why
we focus on individual needs through an “about me form” which is filled in when
booking sessions.
The about me form covers accessibility needs, abilities, likes, struggles, sensory needs and contact details. Using this form, we can ensure that we have suitable equipment available, something that will help the young person feel comfortable entering the session and be aware of any possible triggers.
As the young people attend more sessions, we will get to know them and can adapt and develop the session as they become more confident. If you would like support with the booking form, please contact wendy@underthetrees.co.uk
ASN session attendees’ numbers are kept low, with a maximum of ten children. There are no age restrictions on the sessions which require at least one parent/carer staying during these sessions to provide support if needed.
Staff are trained in Makaton to level 1, including woodland and beach training with a varied experience of supporting additional needs. Boardmaker session plans and symbols, advanced meetings of staff and walkthroughs of the site are all available on request.
Our current family site was picked to make sure it is within a quiet area, has plenty of parking including disabled parking with access to disabled toilets with changing area. We use a site at Larbert woods for groups and school ASN sessions which although had not toilets on site, is very accessible, including for wheelchair users. A portable toilet can be brought to sessions on request.
If you have any questions or queries regarding our ASN sessions, please contact wendy@underthetrees.co.uk
